Young birds migrate on their own
The majority of young birds start their autumn migration 3-4 months after they have hatched.
They fly to their winter habitats with no help of their parents or other adult birds. Just a few species (e.g. swans, geese and cranes) migrate in flocks, so that juvenile birds gain experience guided by their parents.
