Poland is one of the main "junctions" where a number of bird migration routes meet. Our country is an important stopover area for all birds traveling via Europe, from Siberia, Africa and Asia. This is why the condition of Polish natural environment influences the population of birds both in Asia and Africa. And the other way round – all that happens to birds on other continents influences Polish nature.

Birds may migrate thanks to numerous abilities, which we humans may only dream of. They can interpret earth magnetism and use it as their compass. They can also find their direction using the sun and stars for navigation. They are also able to identify the point in the sky all the stars revolve around. This point indicates the north (on the northern hemisphere) and south (on the Antipodes). In order to navigate according to the stars and the sun one also needs to measure time very precisely – birds can do it.

How to help a sick, injured or orphaned bird? Before you decide to take such a bird in your care, you have to be aware of the consequences of such a deed. Caring for a wild bird is a great effort and requires plenty of patience. Moreover, you have to remember that it is your obligation to return the bird safely back to its natural environment.
